SBC Sports Betting News: Steeler Injury Gains A Central Plac

Postby Freddy Wills » Wed Aug 29, 2012 7:52 pm

The past week in sports news has given Pittsburgh Steeler fans new cause for alarm. The very gap that pro football's premier franchise wanted to fill now remains open.

Pittsburgh Loses Right Guard For At Least Half The Season, Possibly Longer

gurus are very much aware of the setback recently endured by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the franchise with more Super Bowl wins (six) than any other. On Saturday night against the Buffalo Bills, the Steelers' first-round draft pick, right guard David DeCastro, suffered a right knee injury that included damage to his medial collateral ligament (MCL) and could involve damage to his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). DeCastro had been playing very well for the Steelers in the first two-plus games of the preseason. He was on his way to shoring up the Steelers' offensive line and giving them the ability to run block, something that was lost amidst an injury-plagued 2011 season. The Steelers sorely missed the ability to run the ball in the AFC wild card round against the Denver Broncos, partly because quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was unable to scramble effectively on a bum ankle. Pittsburgh needs its offensive line to be better in 2012, so the DeCastro injury should lead a lot of outlets to downgrade the Steelers in terms of AFC championship odds.

Majerus Steps Aside At Saint Louis University, Leaving Questions For The Billikens

The mark of a great coach is his ability to guide his horses to the barn safely, so to speak. Therefore, even experts with little knowledge of college basketball can appreciate the problems being faced by the Saint Louis Billikens men's basketball program.

Majerus announced that he would not coach his Saint Louis in the upcoming college basketball season due to cardiovascular problems. Majerus is the jocular and widely respected coach who led the University of Utah to the national championship game in the 1998 NCAA Tournament. He took some time away from the sport and then joined Saint Louis in 2007. In his first four seasons on the job, he failed to get the Billikens to the NCAAs, and a lot of people throughout the sport wondered if he was going to make the promised land for a program that had fallen on hard times in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

However, in the 2011-2012 season, Majerus finally got his players to mesh. Saint Louis played rugged halfcourt defense and bought into Majerus' system. The Billikens beat Xavier late in the season to solidify an NCAA tournament berth, using precise halfcourt sets to get key baskets in the final stages of slow-paced halfcourt slugfests. Saint Louis upset Memphis in the round of 64 at the 2012 NCAA Tournament and came very close to toppling top-seeded Michigan State before falling short in the round of 32. The season was an unqualified success for Saint Louis, exceeding expectations of analysts and oddsmakers, not to mention anyone else who pays regular attention to college basketball. Assistant coach Jim Crews will take over for Majerus in the Gateway City, but the Billikens' prospects for 2013 likely took a hit because Majerus is such a terrific bench coach on game nights.
