SBC Sports Betting News – Baseball And Football Injuries

Postby Freddy Wills » Sun Oct 07, 2012 7:16 pm

An overview of the main game-related sports headlines this week tells you that you need to be cautious about how you bet on the Georgia Bulldogs and the Detroit Tigers, among other teams.

Leading Georgia Receiver Out For The Season As Bulldogs Prepare For Gamecocks

You know that outlets are not going to take wild chances on a Southeastern Conference college football game that is expected to be close and, moreover, unpredictable. The South Carolina Gamecocks were installed as a 2.5-point favorite over the Georgia Bulldogs in a highly anticipated SEC East Division showdown. Now, however, the line might creep up half a point or maybe even a full point on the Gamecocks' side of the ledger. Georgia's leading (yardage) receiver, Michael Bennett, suffered an injury earlier this week that will sideline him for the remainder of the 2012 season. The timing is awful for a Georgia team that needs to be able to throw the ball well enough to set up its running game. If Georgia can't pass the ball with any appreciable degree of consistency, South Carolina's defense will be able to keep eight men in the tackle box, loading up to stop the run. Georgia will have a hard time springing freshmen running backs Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall for big plays, and that's exactly what the Bulldogs must be able to do if they want to attain the upper hand against the Gamecocks. Georgia might still win this game, but Bennett's injury has certainly made the Bulldogs' task more difficult. It is now that much more important for Georgia to be able to force turnovers in this contest and get short fields for its offense on Saturday night.

Scherzer's Ankle Injury Throws A Measure Of Uncertainty Into the A.L. Division Series

Various across the country, if they're not focused on college football, are paying attention to the Major League Baseball playoffs, which are just about to get started. One event that will naturally shift the calculus, at least to a certain extent, is a slight ankle injury suffered by Detroit Tiger starting pitcher Max Scherzer this past Monday. Scherzer injured his ankle while celebrating the Tigers' freshly-clinched American League Central Division championship. He was subsequently seen on Wednesday evening (before the Tigers' regular season finale against the Kansas City Royals) running straight sprints with minimal pain, but manager Jim Leyland did hold him out of his planned start on Wednesday. One wonders if Leyland's move was a precautionary measure, or if the injury could have some lingering effects. This is certainly something that a is going to pay attention to, and when one realizes that Scherzer suffered a case of shoulder fatigue in recent weeks, causing him to lose three to five miles per hour on his fastball (from 96 to 92), it has to be said that Scherzer's start in the American League Division Series against the Oakland Athletics is probably not going to go well. Leyland has not yet announced whether Scherzer will pitch at home in Game 2 on Sunday, or in Oakland for Game 3 on Tuesday.
