The playoffs are finally among us, and after one of the most exciting seasons in NFL history a post season picture is finally starting to take shape. This is the time of year when takes over many fans lives. Let’s look at the first AFC wild card game between the New England Patriots and the Cincinnati Bengals.

New England Patriots

The patriots got over their slow start to once again dominate the AFC East. Luckily for them, the division is one of the weaker ones in the NFL and the Patriots were pretty much guaranteed a playoff spot from the get-go. They were able to beat the Miami Dolphins this past weekend in order to secure home field advantage. However, the team has some serious improving to do if they have any hope of making it to yet another Super Bowl.

Tom Brady is once again having an awesome season, with Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd become the favorite receivers. Rob Gronkowski should be back for the playoffs after suffering from a broken arm a few weeks ago. It is the Patriots defense that needs to be worked on.

The New England defense has had moments of greatness and awfulness. The defense allows 22.1 points per game and allow on average 275 yards per game. They need to improve in order to not only beat the Bengals but move on in the playoffs in general.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals in spite of a bad last few seasons have finally made the playoffs. They have been having a decent year too, with Andy Dalton at the helm. The offense averages 342 yards per game, 229 of those yards are passing yards. Over the season he has thrown 3591 yards for 26 touchdowns. BenJarvus Green-Ellis has made an excellent transition from the New England system. A.J. Green and Jermaine Gresham are two of the NFL’s best receivers and they will be a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs.

The Bengals defense has been playing alright, but it could use some improving as well. They allow 317 yards per game and 20.2 points per game.

It will be a close game, but many and are naming the Patriots as the favorites. They are a safe , but it could be a closer game than anticipated. With the game at Gillette Stadium the Patriots will be a formidable opponent that the Bengals will not be able to handle, especially at home. That is assuming that the Patriots do not mess up the first half, which is always a possibility in New England.

here for the latest on the NFL playoffs.
