Clippers

The Los Angeles Lakers have a new front office led by Hall of Famer Magic Johnson and a new roster that includes No. 2 overall draft pick Lonzo Ball. The Los Angeles Clippers, who will serve as the visitors in the arena shared by both teams in their season opener on Thursday, have a new look as well after waving goodbye to point guard Chris Paul over the summer.

The preseason expectations are lower with the departure of Paul, but Los Angeles did manage to keep another of its stars by signing power forward Blake Griffin to a five-year, $173 million extension. Griffin averaged 21.6 points and 8.1 rebounds last season but only played in 61 games - the third straight season in which he failed to reach 70 games - and is excited for the opportunity to work with his new teammates.

Los Angeles owned the league's third-worst scoring defense in 2016-17, allowing an average of 111.5 points.

The Clippers have taken three straight and 14 of the last 15 in the series.

Clippers are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 games playing on 3 or more days rest. Lakers are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 vs. NBA Pacific.

Pistons

The Eastern Conference looks very top-loaded, with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, Toronto Raptors and Washington Wizards again expected to leave the rest of the teams in the dust. The Detroit Pistons and the Charlotte Hornets, who open their respective seasons against each other in the inaugural NBA regular season game at Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit on Wednesday, are trying to join the party after both missing out on the postseason last spring.

The Pistons looked like playoff contenders at times in 2016-17 but were hurt by injuries to point guard Reggie Jackson and some growing pains from star center Andre Drummond, who is taking on a bigger role in the offense.

The Pistons brought in SG Avery Bradley in a trade from Boston over the summer and will start him in the backcourt.

The Pistons took three of the four meetings last season, including both in Detroit.

Hornets are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 vs. Eastern Conference. Favorite is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

Yankees

The New York Yankees will take another crack at Houston Astros ace Dallas Keuchel when the teams tangle in a critical Game 5 of their American League Championship Series at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday. A two-run seventh inning and four-run eighth propelled New York to a stirring 6-4 comeback victory in Game 4 on Tuesday, knotting the best-of-seven matchup at two wins apiece.

Slugger Aaron Judge, limited to one single in seven at-bats in back-to-back losses at Houston, is 3-for-6 with five RBIs in the two games in the Bronx after beginning the comeback with a solo homer and delivering the game-tying RBI double in the eighth. Judge has collected nine RBIs in five home games during the playoffs and zero in five contests on the road.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (2-0, 0.71 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (1-1, 1.38)

Keuchel is 4-0 with a 1.69 ERA in five career postseason games (four starts) and struck out 10 Yankees in the series-opening win. Both of this year's playoff outings have taken place at home, but the 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner was much more human on the road during the regular season - going 5-5 with a 4.24 ERA and allowing opponents to produce a .720 OPS, compared to .513 at home. Keuchel's last appearance away from home in the playoffs was in relief in Game 5 of the ALDS in 2015, when he was tagged for three runs in one inning.

Like Keuchel, Tanaka has had better fortune at home, and he finished the regular season by going 5-1 with a 1.29 ERA over a six-start stretch at Yankee Stadium. The 28-year-old has given up two runs and seven hits - no home runs - over 13 innings this postseason.

New York has won 18 of its last 21 games at home dating back to the regular season.

Dodgers vs Cubs

Dodgers

The Chicago Cubs have won five straight games when their backs were against the wall dating to last year’s World Series, and they’ll try to make it six on Thursday. The Cubs will try to stave off elimination for a second consecutive night by defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers at home and sending the National League Championship Series back to California.

Kershaw is 5-7 with a 4.57 ERA in 20 career games (16 starts) in the postseason. He split two starts against the Cubs in last year’s NLCS and allowed two runs over five innings in a no-decision in Game 1 of this matchup. Surprisingly, the ace has started only one series-clincher, throwing six scoreless frames to beat Atlanta in the 2013 NL Division Series.

Quintana has been excellent in his first postseason, allowing three runs - two earned - over 11 1/3 innings in two starts and a relief appearance. He gave up two runs and two hits over five frames in Game 1 and left with the contest tied. Quintana went 5-0 with a lofty 4.76 ERA in eight turns at Wrigley Field during the regular season.

If the Cubs are going to live another day, someone other than Wade Davis will have to close out Game 5, as the right-hander recorded six outs on Wednesday for his second multi-inning save of the postseason.

Dodgers relievers have pitched 20 consecutive scoreless innings and given up only three hits in the series.

Dodgers are 6-1 in their last 7 playoff games. Cubs are 4-11 in their last 15 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and are 0-4 in their last 4 games following a win.

The Dodgers move on to the World Series!
