Jack's Free Pick Tuesday: Mariners/A's UNDER 7

I look for an absolute pitcher's duel tonight between the Oakland A's (79-58) and Seattle Mariners (73-63).  Both teams have been led by their pitching this season as the A's are in the first wild card spot in the American League, while the Mariners are 1.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers for the second wild card spot.

James Paxton is one of the best young starters in the game today.  He has missed time due to injury, but when healthy, he has been nothing short of dominant.  Paxton is 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA and 1.093 WHIP over seven starts this season.  In his last five starts since returning from injury, the left-hander has given up five earned runs over 27 1/3 innings for a 1.65 ERA.

Sonny Gray has been the ace of Oakland's rotation this season.  The right-hander has gone 13-7 with a 3.03 ERA and 1.213 WHIP over 27 starts in 2014.  Gray simply loves facing the Mariners, going 4-0 with a 1.10 ERA and 1.010 WHIP in five career starts against them.  He has given up just four earned runs over 32 2/3 innings in those five outings.

The UNDER is 21-8-2 in Mariners last 31 games following a loss.  The UNDER is 21-6 in Mariners last 27 when their opponent scores five runs or more in their previous game.  Seattle has scored 19 runs in its last seven games overall for an average of 2.7 RPG.  Oakland has scored seven runs in its last four games overall for an average of 1.8 RPG.  Bet the UNDER in this game Tuesday.

I am playing on the Oakland A’s:

The A’s may have a replacement for the bat of traded outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, in the form of Adam Dunn. This could not have come at a better time.  In the prior four games against the division leading Angels, all losses, the A’s managed to score only four runs.

Dunn homered in his first at bat last night, leading a 11 hit attack to a 6-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners. The eleven hits were the most by the A’s in 16 games, as they were hitting a paltry .223 in 29 games since Cespedes was traded.

Oakland, who also trail Detroit by 1.5 games in the wild card race, will be looking to close that distance by starting pitcher Sonny Gray (13-7, 3.03 ERA). Gray is a perfect 4-0 lifetime against the Mariners. Gray has an impressive 1.10 ERA in his five all-time matchups and is 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA in three games against Seattle this season. Gray, in his last two starts, has gone 1-0 with a 3.52 ERA.

This game won’t be an easy game. The Mariners will counter with James Paxton (4-1, 1.83). The left-hander improved to 7-1 with a 1.71 ERA in 11 major league starts Tuesday after pitching 6 2/3 innings in a 5-0 win over Texas. The Mariners have lost five of their last seven and will need a strong performance to stop that from going to six of eight.

I also like the fact that Oakland is 51-38 under the lights while Seattle is barely over .500 with a record of 46-44. Look for the added punch in the bat of Dunn to right Oakland’s struggling offense as they rough up the youngster Paxton.
