News: Red Sox, Braves Still Struggling In September Slumps

After falling to the New York Yankees in the opener of a day-night doubleheader, the Boston Red Sox needed 14 innings to clinch a 7-4 win as Jacoby Ellsbury smacked a three-run shot with two out in the top of the 14th that would stand as the winner. The Red Sox will now wrap up their regular season with a visit to face the Baltimore Orioles, leading the Tampa Bay Rays by just one game, with the Rays facing a three-game set against the Yankees. Meanwhile in the National League the Atlanta Braves were blanked by the Washington Nationals 3-0, and will now need to find a way to beat out the Philadelphia Phillies in order to hold off the St. Louis Cardinals, now just one game back. The Cardinals will visit the Houston Astros for a three-game set, with the chance to make some noise, against the worst team in the majors.

News: Bills, Raiders Steal Headlines For Week Three Wins

In a week in which it seemed as though every game was going down to the wire, there were a couple of notable teams that made huge splashes yesterday as underdogs, as the Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders both won at home. Led by running back Darren McFadden’s 171-yard, two-touchdown performance, the Raiders beat up Rex Ryan’s New York Jets in a 34-24 win. Meanwhile at Orchard Park, Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 369 yards and two touchdowns, while the Bills’ defense forced Tom Brady into four interceptions in a 34-31 win that left them as the only undefeated team remaining in the AFC. While Buffalo has emerged as the biggest surprise of the season, the Indianapolis Colts continued to disappoint despite making things interesting against the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 23-20 home loss on Monday Night Football. On Monday, Colts’ owner Jim Irsay tweeted there was an outside chance Manning could come back in December, and that he would not be played on the IR.

In one of the most improbable playoff rounds in recent memory, Bill Haas managed to outduel Hunter Mahan in a sudden-death playoff to win both the FedEx Cup and the TOUR championship on Sunday, and claim the $10 million bonus that comes with the victory. Haas made a couple of incredible shots, including saving par after his ball rolled in to the water by chipping it from a position where it was half-submerged. All six of the players that were ahead of him on the final day of the tournament faltered, and with the stars aligned Haas somehow emerged for the big win.

NASCAR News: Stewart Wins Again To Pull Ahead In Chase

While the upsets rolled in on the gridiron, Tony Stewart and his team pulled off another on the race track with an improbable win at New Hampshire to move in to first place in the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings. Stewart capitalized on a group of leaders that ran out of gas on the final lap a week ago to win at Chicagoland Speedway, and did the same this week when Clint Bowyer ran out of gas with two laps to go to take a seven-point lead ahead of Kevin Harvick for first in the standings.
