IRL News: Franchitti Wins The Indy 500 For Third Time; Remembers Wheldon

In one of the most emotional scenes in sports so far this year, Dario Franchitti won the Indianapolis 500 for the third time on Sunday, as drivers and fans honored the memory of his good friend Dan Wheldon. It marked the first time in 66 years that defending Indy 500 winner was not in the race, after Wheldon was involved in a terrible crash last season that took his life. Wheldon’s widow Susie was on hand at the event for the weekend, receiving the champion’s ring on Dan’s behalf Thursday, and watching the race from the pits on Sunday with some of her closest friends from the racing community. When Franchitti won, there was a long embrace between he and Susie after the race, and she took the victory lap with the winner and his wife Ashley Judd afterward. Wheldon was one of Franchitti’s best friends, and it really was an incredible sight to see the emotion around one of the great auto racing events in North American sports.

Betting News: Spurs Strike First In Western Conference Final Sunday

Even after winning their final 10 regular season games to lock up top spot in the conference, and sweeping through the first two rounds of the postseason to accumulate a total 18 straight wins overall, the San Antonio Spurs still can’t seem to get any respect. The Spurs had their way with the Oklahoma City Thunder at home for game one of their Western conference finals, winning 101-98 in a game that helped reinforce how important it was for San Antonio to finish the season strong and lock up home court advantage over the second-seeded Thunder. Tony Parker had 18 points, eight rebounds, and six assists for the Spurs, while Manu Ginobili contributed a team-high 26 points off the bench. Game two goes Tuesday in San Antonio.

MLB News: Harper Goes Yard As Nationals Sweep Braves

The National League East-leading Washington Nationals continued their hot streak on Sunday, with rookie Bryce Harper hitting his fourth home run of the season in a 7-2 win to complete a sweep of the Atlanta Braves on Sunday. Nationals’ starter Gio Gonzalez pitched a gem, working seven innings with just one earned run allowed and 10 strikeouts for the win, improving to 7-1 on the season. Washington now look to carry over the momentum from this sweep when they face another tough test this week against the New York Mets, which are right behind them in the standings.

NASCAR News: Kahne Wins Coca-Cola 600 Sunday

Once again it was Kasey Kahne coming out on top at NASCAR’s longest race on Sunday, winning the Coca-Cola 600 and continuing the hot streak that Hendrick Motorsports has been on this season. The win comes after five-time Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson won the 200th race for HMS at Darlington a couple of weeks ago, and then went on to take home the $1 million prize in the All Star race.
