Wimbledon News: Federer Cashes In With Seventh Win At Wimbledon

In one of the most exciting and intriguing matchups of the tennis season, the legendary Roger Federer overcame the hometown favorite Andy Murray in four sets to earn his seventh Wimbledon championship and 17th Grand Slam singles title on Sunday. Murray came out flying to take the first round 6-4, but after Federer rallied to even the match in the second round 7-5, the rain began to fall at the All-England Club and the roof over center court was closed. This played right in to Federer’s game, and he dominated the rest of the way with his excellent anticipation and touch being the difference in a match he needed just two more sets to win. While the storyline of Murray trying to become the first native son to win Wimbledon since before the second World War added a ton of intrigue to the match, the fallout has included some incredible betting stories, including the man from Great Britain that bet 1,520 pounds ($2,361.96) at 66-1 odds that Federer would win Wimbledon at least seven times. The wager was made nine years ago, and while the man who made it passed away in 2009, the ticket for $157,749.85 was cashed out yesterday and donated to a charity organization.

MLB News: Yankees Enter Break On Top; Rangers Still Go Out With Bang

The New York Yankees took their third of four from the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Sunday, beating their American League East rivals 7-3 to reach the All-Star break with the best record in baseball at 52-33. While both of these teams were expected to contend for a division title this season, the Yankees have gone 21-8 through their past 29 games to pull away from the pack in the AL East, while the Red Sox fell to the basement of the division with another loss, their fifth in six tries against New York this season. Finishing right behind the Yankees for the best record heading in to the All-Star break is the Texas Rangers, just one-half game back but with the same number of wins at 52-34. The Rangers beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 on Sunday night, but while a rally from the top-ranked offense in the majors to tie the game in the ninth and then win it in the 13th was impressive, the highlight of the night came in the top of the fourth, where an explosion of thunder right near the stadium sent players running for cover. The video is already all over the Internet, but you’ll likely see it a ton on television anyway with the home run derby Monday, and the All-Star game scheduled for Tuesday.

NBA News: Nets Could Land Howard With Help Of Cavaliers

The Brooklyn Nets have made it clear they will do everything they can to land center Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic in time for the team’s move this season. According to sources, the Cleveland Cavaliers could help the Nets facilitate a trade with Orlando, with Kris Humphries potentially on his way to Cleveland, and Brook Lopez and three future first-round draft picks headed to the Magic. With Howard repeating that Brooklyn is the only team he will sign an extension with, the options for Orlando are already limited, and the addition of a third team to talks could really benefit their overall outlook.

NHL News: Luongo Trade Options Down To Maple Leafs, Panthers

While there is potential for any team to jump in to the mix for Vancouver Canucks’ goaltender Roberto Luongo at any time, it seems more likely with every passing day that the Olympic gold medalist and Stanley Cup champion is likely headed to either the Toronto Maple Leafs or Vancouver Canucks. Both teams have had discussions with Vancouver about the deal, and while the Detroit Red Wings are the third team interested in Luongo, the Canucks aren’t likely to deal a No. 1 goaltender to a conference rival. It may take some time before Luongo is actually moved as Vancouver continues to shop for the best return, but don’t expect him to be there once camp begins, with Cory Schneider the new No. 1 goalie for the Canucks.
