Golf News: Els Comes Out Of Nowhere To Win Open Championship

After more than two years without winning, Ernie Els shocked the world with an incredible comeback to win the Open Championship in the final round on Sunday. Els opened the round six strokes back of leader Adam Scott, who played his role in the drama by providing one of the most memorable collapses in tournament history. The 32-year old Australian had a four-shot lead with four holes to go, but stumbled down the stretch and missed a seven-foot par putt on the final hole that would have forced a playoff. Els apologized to Scott as he held the Claret Jug for the second time in his career, and while it was he who would get his name etched on the trophy, the fact that Scott’s name would be added to the list of players that have failed on the biggest stage was not lost on anyone.

MLB News: Athletics Remain Red Hot With Sweep Of Yankees

The Oakland Athletics added to their remarkable month of July with a 5-4 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday, completing the four-game sweep with their sixth walk-off of the month, to earn their 14th wins in 16 games. Oakland’s 14-2 record in July is easily the best mark in the majors, and has put the team in position to contend for an playoff spot with 51 wins overall, now tied with the Baltimore Orioles for the second AL Wild Card spot. The Los Angeles Angels wrapped up a three-game set against the Texas Rangers with their second win, as Albert Pujols went deep for his 18th home run of the season in a 7-4 final. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Pirates continued their hot streak with a 3-0 win over the Miami Marlins, winning their fifth in a row to stay within one-half game of the Cincinnati Reds for top spot in the National League Central.

NCAAF News: NCAA Comes Down Hard On Penn State

The NCAA came down hard on the Penn State football program Monday, punishing the football program for its faults over the past decade in relation to the acts of former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. The announcements follow the removal of the Joe Paterno statue from the Penn State grounds on Sunday, and now open the door for major changes to both the roster and culture of Nittany Lions football. It is expected that several players will look to transfer to other programs and still play the 2012 football season, a process that has already begun for other teams looking to add to their rosters.

NFL News: Dream Team Opens Training Camp Without Pro Bowl Tackle

The Philadelphia Eagles became the first team to open training camp for the 2012 season on Sunday, and while quarterback Michael Vick didn’t back off his comments about this year’s version of the dream team having a chance to become a dynasty, a Pro Bowl defensive tackle was ruled out for at least the next month. Mike Patterson still hasn’t fully healed from an incision made when he had brain surgery in January, and the team has ruled he won’t be available for camp and possibly further because of the injury. Patterson played 15 games for Philadelphia last season after doctor’s ruled the surgery could wait until the end of the season, and he could still be ready for week one of the 2012 regular season.
