Olympic News: Dream Team Slams France; France Answers In 4x100 Relay

The US basketball team opened tournament play with a dominant performance on Sunday, with Kevin Durant scoring a game-high 22 points in 98-71 win over France. Lebron James finished with eight assists, Kevin Love added 14 points, and the 2012 “Dream Team” cruised past a French squad that was expected to keep it close with Tony Parker and five other NBA players. For as dominant as the US side was on the hardcourt, the biggest surprise came in the pool where France upset the American team in the 4x100 relay. Led by Michael Phelps, the USA built a commanding lead through the first three-quarters of the race, and was well ahead of the defending champion team from Australia. However, Ryan Lochte could not hold on to a half-body length lead down the stretch, and the French side rallied for the gold. It was a shocking turn of events for the heavily favored American team, with Phelps forcing to settle for the first silver medal of his Olympic career.

MLB News: Greinke Falls In Angels’ Debut; Red Sox Beat Yankees In 10

Zack Greinke lived up to expectations in his Los Angeles Angels’ debut, giving up just two earned runs on seven hits through seven innings, while striking out eight in front of a packed house at Angels Stadium on Sunday. Unfortunately, that performance wasn’t enough to get the win, as Tampa Bay Rays’ starter Jeremy Hellickson pitched six scoreless with five strikeouts, leaving the bullpen to complete the 2-0 win. Regardless, the Boston Red Sox were likely taking notes on Greinke’s debut, and should be in the market for a starting arm of their own following a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees in 10 innings on Sunday. The win was the second in three games for the Red Sox against their divisions rivals, and moves them within four wins of the two AL Wild Card spots ahead of Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline.

NASCAR News: Johnson Wins Brickyard 400; Jr. Climbs To Top Of Standings

The Hendrick Motorsports stable continued what has already been an impressive season on Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where Jimmie Johnson won the Brickyard 400 and Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished fourth. The victory was Johnson’s third of the season and pushed him to within 27 points of the new points standings leader Earnhardt Jr., who is now 14 ahead of Matt Kenseth for that top spot. The No. 48 car showed the level of dominance that has made Johnson a five-time SCS winner in the past, with Kyle Busch commenting after a second-place finish that, “If it wasn’t for the 48, we were probably in our own ZIP code on the rest of the field. But Jimmie Johnson was in his own country today.”

PGA News: Piercy Claims Second PGA Tour Victory At Canadian Open

A third-straight 67 was enough to help Scott Piercy claim his second PGA Tour Victory on Sunday, as he finished one stroke ahead of Robert Garrigus to claim top spot at the Canadian Open. Piercy opened the tournament with an opening round 62 that helped him build a comfortable lead in the tournament, and his consistency the rest of the way was just enough to help the 33-year old take the title.
