News: Luck Struggles Mightily In Second Preseason Start Sunday

After throwing for 188 yards and two touchdowns in his preseason debut, there were those that moved quickly to anoint Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Andrew Luck as a future Hall of Fame quarterback. However, Luck wasn’t nearly as dominant in his second exhibition game, throwing a pair of interceptions and registering just one rushing touchdown against a much tougher Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense on Sunday, in a 26-24 loss. While there is little doubt about the ceiling for the first-overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, it is also clear that it will take some time for Luck to develop in to one of the game’s elite passers. Sunday’s exhibition game was a reminder of exactly that, and it’s a good thing that it happened the way it did before most fantasy drafts take place this week.

MLB News: Alvarez Lifts Pirates Past St. Louis With 19th Inning Home Run

It took six hours and seven minutes before a winner was determined in Sunday’s game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals, but for baseball fans in Steeltown the ending was worth the wait. Pedro Alvarez hit a home run in the top of the 19th and Andrew McCutchen padded the Pirates’ lead to 6-3 before St. Louis got the chance to answer in the bottom half, when Wandy Rodriguez clinched the victory for Pittsburgh with three strikeouts over two scoreless innings of work. The game tied the record for longest game in MLB history, and more importantly for a Pirates’ team that improved to 4-0 in extra innings, it moved them two games clear of the Cardinals for the final National League Wild Card spot. Meanwhile, Aaron Hill helped the Arizona Diamondbacks clinch their fourth-straight victory by going 3 for 4 with two home run in an 8-1 win over the Houston Astros, while the Oakland Athletics won their fourth-straight with a 4-0 decision over the Cleveland Indians that kept them within one-half game of the Baltimore Orioles for the final American League Wild Card spot.

NASCAR News: Biffle Wins Pure Michigan 400 After Engine Fails On 48 Car

When Jimmie Johnson pushed passed Brad Keselowski late in the Pure Michigan 400, it seemed as though the Sprint Cup Series points leader was destined to pad his lead with what would have been his series-leading fourth victory. However, fate had a different plan for the five-time SCS champion, and engine failure with six laps to go opened the door for Greg Biffle to speed past Johnson for his second win of the season, which elevated him to first place in the overall points standings with three races to go before the Chase. Johnson could not finish the race, and fell to fourth in the overall standings, 28 back of Biffle.

Premier League News: City Storm Back For Opening Day Win

The defending Premier League champion Manchester City needed to rally from a 1-0 deficit to newly promoted Southhampton in order to avoid a loss in its opening match of the season on Sunday. Down 2-1 in the second half, the Citizens responded with goals from Edin Dzeko and Samir Nasri that came at the 72nd and 80th minute respectively, and put Manchester City ahead for good. Meanwhile, reigning Champions League winners Chelsea enjoyed a successful debut as well on Sunday, with goals from Branislav Ivanovic and Frank Lampard the difference in a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic.
